WeChat is the most popular multi-purpose messaging, social media and mobile payment app developed by the internet giant Tencent Holdings, one of the most valuable companies in the world, worth well over $500 billion as of mid-May 2020.

Originally launched in January 2011 in China as a messaging app called Weixin(微信), the app was rebranded as WeChat for the international market in 2012.

This super-app of WeChat has grown by leaps and bounds. As of September 2019, the number of global active WeChat users hit 1.15 billion, up 6.3% year-on-year. A whopping 45 billion messages are exchanged on the platform on a daily basis. It has become an integral part of people’s lives, helping connect people with their friends and family through text messages, voice, and video calls.

It has become China’s app for almost everything. You can book tickets, order take-out food, hail a Taxi, book a restaurant, wire money, pay for utilities and look for accommodation on WeChat. In a nutshell, life in China will be extremely inconvenient without WeChat.

Therefore, it is imperative that one should create a WeChat account if he/she intends to blend in and live a comfortable life in China. Again, as always, remember to subscribe and follow us on WeChat as we shall teach you more on how to use WeChat effectively in our next post.
